The Punjab government has received approval from the Centre to establish an Integrated Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) on 1,102 acres in Rajpura, Patiala district. This project is a significant component of the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor and aims to position Rajpura as a key hub for industrial and commercial activities. The IMC is expected to attract investments worth Rs 6,400 crore from both national and international investors.
The Central Government will invest Rs 1,367 crore in the project, which will be situated on land between the industrial corridor and the national highway. The Punjab government has already acquired the necessary land for this purpose, and a detailed project report was submitted to the Centre in 2020.
A government official highlighted that the IMC is part of a broader initiative to develop futuristic industrial cities in India that can compete with leading manufacturing and investment destinations globally. The project is anticipated to generate employment opportunities and drive economic growth, contributing to overall socio-economic development.
To support this growth, the Centre, in collaboration with state governments, is developing integrated industrial corridors as part of a national strategy for systematic urbanization and enhanced multi-modal connectivity. This strategy includes the development of 11 industrial corridors with 32 nodes/projects, to be implemented in four phases by 2024-25, under the National Master Plan on Multi-Modal Connectivity.
The IMC in Rajpura will feature a range of amenities, including a primary school, convention center, institutional site, dispensary, center for excellence, commercial spaces, nursing home, public utility facilities, police post, shop-cum-offices, hotel, guard’s booth, water reservoir, water treatment plant, solid waste management, common effluent treatment plant, sewage treatment plant, fire station, fuel station, parking, and a bus terminal.
This project is a 50:50 joint venture between the Central and state governments, with a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to be established for its execution. “With the approval now secured, work on the project will commence swiftly,” an official noted.
